Gene K. Lee, MD, MPH
Eyelid Surgery in
Beverly Hills, CA
From signs of aging like loose skin, folds, drooping eyelids, and wrinkles, our delicate eyelids are vulnerable to a variety of changes. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is one method that can refresh and rejuvenate the appearance of aging eyes. During eyelid surgery, a plastic surgeon creates a small incision in the fold of the upper eyelid to remove any excess skin. In the case of excess skin on the lower eyelid, the incision is placed right below the lash line to remove any extra skin. When conducted by a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon, this procedure can enhance the appearance of the eyes, fix eyesight issues, and achieve a rejuvenated look that lasts.
Gene K. Lee, MD, MPH, earned his degree in both aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery at some of the most prestigious institutions in the world. The training and expertise he gained through his education and training have equipped him with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform successful surgical techniques safely and successfully on the delicate eyelid areas, leading to natural, long-lasting results.

What Is Eyelid Surgery?
The skin around the eyes is one of the most delicate on the human body because of how thin it is. When you combine the delicate nature of this skin with years of rubbing, pulling, and expression make the skin susceptible to early and extreme signs of aging.
An eyelid surgery is a plastic surgery procedure that involves small incisions concealed within the natural crease of your eyelid, where excess skin can be removed and repositioned to create a more youthful look. As a result, patients see a significant improvement in the appearance of their eyelids, which can even help correct issues with crowded vision that is being obstructed by their loose, hanging skin.
What Concerns Can A Los Angeles
Eyelid Surgery Address?
Eyelid surgery can be performed on one or both eyes and offers patients a variety of functional and cosmetic benefits that they can enjoy for years following their procedure. In addition to improving their general appearance, eyelid surgery can also:
- Remove or reposition excess fatty deposits on the upper and lower eyelids
- Eliminate sagging skin of the upper eyelid
- Reposition a ptotic lacrimal gland
- Correct and weakened and ptotic upper eyelid muscle
- Improve vision by clearing the upper field of vision
- Create a more youthful and rested appearance
- Reduce the appearance of puffy under-eye bags and dark circles with a lower blepharoplasty
What Are the Different Types of Eyelid Surgeries?
Upper Blepharoplasty
An upper blepharoplasty addresses cosmetic and/or functional issues involving the upper eyelids, such as drooping and wrinkling. These undesirable features can make an individual look old, sad, or tired.
To help improve the appearance and functionality of the upper eyelids, Dr. Lee will make strategic incisions within the natural crease of the upper eyelids, making any scarring nearly unnoticeable to the naked eye. Depending on your specific needs, tiny eye muscles will be tightened, sufficient skin will be excised, and fat will be removed to ensure the most natural-looking outcomes.
Lower Blepharoplasty
As we age, the muscles and connective tissue around the eyes lose their elasticity, leading to the fat encompassing the eye to spill over the lower edge of the eye socket bone. This leads to fat spillage over the bone, which leads to the formation of unwanted hills and valleys, unattractive dark circles, and deep shadows that take away from the rejuvenated appearance of the eyes. To fight against this degradation, lower blepharoplasty can be performed. Dr. Lee will create an incision on the inner surface of the eyelid, where he will either remove or reposition the ocular fat pad causing these contour irregularities. In patients with extra lower eyelid skin, the excess eyelid skin will be removed through a skin pinch technique right along the lower eyelid lash line.
Hidden Incision Lower Blepharoplasty with Fat Grafting
Lower eyelid bags can affect both younger and older patients alike. Some individuals develop bulging fat pads at a young age, and others notice that their undereyes have become hollow and sunken. A lower eyelid blepharoplasty uses a hidden incision just underneath the lash line, where the bulging lower lid fat pads are removed to create a smooth contour going from the lower eyelid to the cheek.
Fat grafting is almost always combined with a hidden incision lower blepharoplasty to smooth the tear trough and resolve any hollowness in the upper cheeks. Dr. Lee uses micro-fat transfer using the patient’s own fat. A micro fat transfer is a highly technical procedure to create a natural look and feel to the mid-face without making someone look overfilled.
Double Eyelid Surgery (Ethnic Eyelid Surgery)
Also referred to as “Asian Eyelid Surgery” or ethnic eyelid surgery due to its popularity in East Asia, the double eyelid surgery procedure is for patients with a monolid or eyes that lack a crease on the upper eyelid. Many individuals of Asian descent have monolid eyes that complement their facial features or that they deem important to their heritage; others opt for double eyelid surgery to enlarge their eyes and improve their functionality. The goal of double eyelid surgery is to create a supra-tarsal crease in the lids. The result is a permanent crease that makes the eyes look larger and brighter.
Dr. Lee is meticulous about respecting your unique heritage and is careful to preserve the unique cultural characteristics of your eyes.
Epicanthoplasty
Epicanthoplasty is used to correct the Mongolian, or epicanthal, fold of the eyes. The Mongolian fold is when the upper eyelid skin hides the inner corners of the eyes, making them appear smaller and the shape undefined. Dr. Lee creates a small incision on the inner corner of the eye to resolve the above problems. The results are bigger, more defined eyes. Patients often choose to do epicanthoplasty with double eyelid surgery to form a more natural-looking, defined eye shape.
